Thumpy's Story: A Story of Love & Grief Shared by Thumpy the Bunny
Published in Paperback by Prairie Lark Pr (1984)
Average review score:

A wonderful book to explain death to small children.I recently suffered the death of my 3rd baby boy, Tanner Jason. He was a full term baby, born into the arms of angels on September 30, 1999. (stillborn) My other 2 boys are ages 5 and 2. They were very anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new baby brother. It was the saddest moment of my life when I told them that their brother had died and would not be coming home with us. It is so hard to explain to death to small children. Thumpy's Story is the story of a bunny family who experiences the loss of one of the 3 child bunnies. It details every aspect of the death on a child's level...such as death is when breath and movement stop. The story is written from Thumpy's perspective and talks of how his parents were sad and how he and his brother handled the loss of their sister. It even delves into burial. My 5 year old son asked me to read it and reread it many times. He could really relate to Thumpy. I am so glad I have found this book for him. It is THE BEST children's book on this topic I have found.

Tom Dodge Talks About Texas
Published in Paperback by Republic of Texas Pr ()
Average review score:

Priceless - at least for those of us bred and born in TexasMy mother gave this book to me for Christmas. She taught with Mr. Dodge several years ago and is a fan of his NPR pieces. I didn't start it right away and wish that I had. It is a light read - short bits so you can pick it up and put it down. Unfortunately, I don't want to put it down. It is thoroughly delightful! I'm familiar with the places and Texas authors he mentions in the book so it is great fun. I'm going to buy several for my other family members and friends who are also Texas born - and for a few of those friends that aren't.

War, Violence and Children in Uganda
Published in Paperback by Universitetsforlaget (May, 1994)
Average review score:

Establishes the victims of armed conflict and restores hope!Cole P. Dodge is on-board once again with the right government and non-government organizations (NGOs) and the right individuals in the aid organizations who documented the real crisis, largely without the blessing of the organizations they represented, facing Ugandan children growing up to be challenged by unstable regimes... especially in the decade of the 1980s. He holds world-class credentials and contacts as well as the will of the common man at the forefront. His name is synonymous with the abundant efforts of UNICEF in Uganda on behalf of women and children. This title draws upon his background in social anthropology, public health administration, writing talent and concern for the psychological healing of the child soldier and urban and rural children that faced poverty, brutilization, the rape, murder and torture of siblings, family members and relatives, dislocation from their homes and resources like healthcare and education. Many themes supply closure and hope for the future of these children that are now entering adulthood. To understand the environment, attitudes and condition of the child as a natural resource is to read the whole story from the children themselves and heavily invest in the mechanisms of education, health and hope. This title comes highly recommended for and by academics, healthcare practitioners, aid agency workers and any person that is involved in development issues and youth involvement.

What Every Parent Needs to Know About 1st, 2nd & 3rd Grades: An Essential Guide to Your Child's Education
Published in Paperback by Sourcebooks Trade (April, 1997)
Average review score:

Excellent source for parents and teachers! This book brings to light the latest research in how kids learn best. It gives parents an idea of how to encourage teachers to incorporate the newest strategies without being confrontational. It shows teachers how to implement the findings into their curriculum and gives lists of possible questions parents may (should) ask. It also gives parents a checklist of what the classroom should look like, how the teacher should be with the children, etc. Finally a book on every child's side. Years of research have proven that children have different learning styles and teachers need to address that. As a mother and teacher, I will be using this book constantly as one of my greatest sources.

Whores and Thieves of the Worst Kind: A Study of Women, Crime, and Prisons, 1835-2000
Published in Hardcover by Northern Illinois Univ Pr (September, 2002)
Average review score:

Voices from Inside Women's Prison's- Past and PresentThis book was given to me as a gift and I never expected to find it so interesting. It's extremely lively, well-written and filled with fascinating stories of the women who were unfortunate enough to find themselves incarcerated. The stories are based upon a careful analysis of a wealth of primary sources that have never before been brought to light. Anyone interested in women's history or criminal justice over the last two centuries will discover new insights. I was especially disconcerted to realize how much a woman's race, class, ethnicity and other factors determined what happened to her in the criminal justice system. Since the book goes up to the present, it should be required reading for contemporary criminologists as well. However, I admit that I skimmed part two which is filled with statisical analysis which is not my forte. In my opinion the greatest strengths of this book include the interviews with former prison personnel, quotes from parole hearings, letters from prisoners, psychiatric reports, punishment records and relevant photographs.

You Are Your Birthday
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (November, 2000)
Average review score:

UncannyAs both a "fan" of astrology and numerology, this is by far the best book on detailing someone's personality just by the day they were born. It gives specific "details" that are somewhat eerie.....just check out the dates for people close to you as well and you will not believe it. A few of the things I read were a bit unsettling, but a MUST read.

Zagat Survey 1997 Houston Restaurants (Annual)

Average review score:

Essential guide for locals and visitorsOnce again the Zagat guide is jam-packed with great information for visitors and locals alike. Honest reviews give you a chance to make intelligent and informed decisions without advertising or hype
I'm sure there are newer editions out since this one (I believe there's one call Anapolis Guide to Seamanship or something similiar.), but as it is, I found it quite informative and even a little useful. I can now splice a wire rope correctly.
